Blog Post 2 - HAILEY RIAL

“Four flips the gun in this hand, presses the barrel to Peter's forehead, and clicks a bullet into place. Peter freezes with his lips parted, the yawn dead in his mouth. "Wake. Up," Four snaps. "You are holding a loaded gun, you idiot. Act like it.” (77).

During initiation, Four is teaching the new members of Dauntless how to use a gun. When Peter questions the need for guns, Four uses the gun to prove his power over the new initiates- mainly Peter, and the reasoning behind needing to know how to use a gun in Dauntless.

So What Step 1: 

QUESTION: 

Example: Why have Peter ask this question? 

ANSWER

Example: Peter is from a faction that is known for always speaking up, so this not only shows the background of Peter but it brings up an important question that a lot of new initiates may have been wondering about.  We have all been taught from young ages to ask questions, even if they're stupid. Veronica Roth takes this small lesson and turns it into a dystopian lesson. 


So What Step 2: 

QUESTION: Why did Four react so harshly to a simple question?

Example: 

ANSWER: Four's job is to teach the new initiates about Dauntless, from the physical to the emotional parts. By reacting so harshly, he intended to show his true Dauntless side- a side that the new initiates will have to become accustomed to and to adapt themselves.  When we grow, we change as people. Roth aims to prove that just as children change into teenagers with new attitudes and mindsets, initiates must change their attitudes and mindsets when they enter a new faction.

So What Step 3: 

QUESTION: 

Example: What does this say about Dauntless?

ANSWER:

Example: This says that Dauntless is a faction that cares both about how to protect themselves from danger and how to present themselves to others in their factions and others outside of their factions.  Roth suggests through this faction that society today fears not only their personal safety, but the way that other's see them, both family and outsiders.
