The strand depicted above conveys to the reader how a oppression is associated with the form of dystopia. This is significant as a whole because it describes that dystopian societies seem to keep power by operating through oppression.

Miller uses the words youth, or child, and adult to contrast the differences in older dystopias with the dystopias in today's popular culture. By comparing the old dystopias with the new, Miller states that the "grownup" dystopias seem to be harsher than those of today.
