My primary source is The Selection by Kiera Cass. The story is set in a future version of America, called Illea. It is ruled by a monarchy and it is time for the prince, Maxon, to pick his future queen. The main character, America Singer, is eligible to enter the selection to become one of the thirty-five girls in the running to marry Maxon. However, America is secretly in love with someone else, Aspen, and does not want to leave him. Being in the selection could help increase her family’s status and provide them with money. With pressure from her family, she enters the competition and wins the chance to go live with the royal family for the duration of her time in the selection.
In recent papers I have discussed the effects of social systems in dystopia. This particular book has an interesting social system where the citizens are divided into groups and given numbers from one to eight, eight being the lowest and one being the highest. Based on their number their family can only have certain jobs and they can only move up in number if they marry someone in a higher caste. I think it would be interesting to figure out how this reflects ideas that are taking place in our current society. Another thing I would like to look at in this novel is the form of government and how it impacts society.
