Megan Lightcap - Blog Post 7

I will be reading The Selection by Kiera Cass for Unit 3. This book is about a Prince named Maxon who must select his wife in a setting very similar to the television show, "The Bachelor". Thirty-five of age girls from around the country, representing all of the castes, are chosen to go live in the castle for a few months as the Prince decides who he would like to marry. The protagonist of this novel, America Singer, is one of the few women in the country of Illéa who does not want to be Selected. This novel explains her journey through the selection and her finding love in the most unexpected ways.

This novel seems to have a lot to do with how reality television can corrupt human nature and dehumanize the people who are involved. It also seems to have many aspects where America tries to defy gender norms and make decisions that are different from the decisions her other female peers would make. This novel has many feminist ideas that would fit well with the other topics I have observed in Divergent and The Hunger Games in the previous units.
