The primary source that I have chosen for section three is
the book The Martian. The general
plot of the book is that a man and his team travel to mars. Once there they
start a mission that is cut short by a freak storm. In the storm one of the
crew members is knocked out and their suit calls them dead. The others in the
crew not being able to find them and being told he is dead leave. However he is
not dead and he is now tasked with the goal of making a three month temporary
structure along with food and oxygen last four years until the next mission can
come back to get him.
The Martian is a
perfect fit for my dystopian interests. It follows a strong male protagonist
who must use not only his general handiness, but also a lot of science to even
try to survive. Another aspect that I find interesting is the looming terror of
failure. One mistake could lead to death or lack of communication which leads
to death, or lack of food which leads to death. Any number of things could end
the main character at any point. Another aspect of this dystopia that I find intriguing
is that being completely alone on a planet the only dystopian factor is the
environment. There is no government in space. This also means that there are no
villainous characters for the protagonist to fight which I think will make the
story very unique as far as dystopias go.
