Aditi Bhatnagar: Blog Post 5

Williams and Wolmark

Williams: family, patriarchy, dominance; Wolmark: patriarch, authority
Williams: Pure simple woman, Masculine dominance; Wolmark: Gender/sex, dominant, contradictory narratives.
Williams: Political, social; Wolmark: Cultural politics/intervention

Both Wolmark and WIlliams discuss the differences in gender roles that are portrayed within dystopian narratives. Although Wolmark discuss that this difference is apparent in dystopian literature, she discusses how feminist science fiction is challenging these pre-existing social constructs. Williams, on the other hand, states that there is a difference of male and female characterizations in dystopian novels, but he discusses evidence of that. He does not discuss that there is a change toward a more gender neutral science fiction like Wolmark.
