At the beginning of the movie, Prim has to get her finger pricked before the choosing ceremony to authenticate that it is she. After the her finger is pricked the Peacekeeper smears her bright red blood on the paper and then the scene pans out to and the viewer sees the bright red capital flag.
Observation 1: The Color Red/Black. Red Blood and Red flag of the Capital.
Observation 2: Prim’s Clothing (dirty/bland/black shoes)
Observation 3: Peacekeepers Outfit (stark white/black gloves)
Observation 4: Childrens Character (nervous/won’t keep eye contact)
Observation 5: Peacekeepers Character (aggressive/rigid/prompt/exact)
Observation 6: Bird’s Eye View (looks down over the reaping/shows flurry of action)
Observation 7: Shallow Focus (switches between different children’s faces to show emotions)
Observation 1: The Color Red/Black
Implication 1: Sense of Danger
Implication 2: Long shot of red capital flag shows the distance between the capital and the people
Implication 3: Blood on paper represents child losing identity and becoming a pawn
Implication 4: Close up on black glove of Peacekeeper shows the faceless personality of the peacekeeper (they’re all the same and treat the people as if they’re nothing but objects)
Implication 5: Loss of childhood
Implication 6: Shows the power the capital has over the people
Implication 7: Shows violence that is ensuing
This represents the overwhelming control that the government has over the people in a Dystopian society. The people of Pan-Am believe that they deserve this punishment and glorify the Hunger Games; the red and black represent the violence of the games and the punishment the deserve, respectfully. They follow the instructions of the Capital without question which only supports the claim of an authoritarian rule.
