In this scene Nux as well as his companion attempt to chase
the main semi and bring it down while the rest of the search party follows
behind. Their attempt goes bad however when the sandstorm and the loss of a
tire results in them crashing.
Observations:
1.
In the first seconds of the scene there is a
vector that draws the audience’s eyes down the curve of the sandstorm and down
to the vehicle chase.
2.
During the driving there are several close up
shots of the drivers faces to show their struggling.
3.
In the background of many of the shots of the
vehicles one can see the giant looming sandstorm getting closer and closer.
4.
After entering the sandstorm the color scheme
gets darker and redder with small bursts of light from the lightning.
5.
There is an extreme long shot that zooms into a
close up of max as the war boy vehicle is sucked into the tornado.
6.
Once nux decides to try to turn his car into a
driving bomb the camera draws attention to him spilling fuel all over the
inside of his car while spraying his mouth and lighting a flare. This particular
moment is the most dramatic in the scene with the music intensifying, then when
the car flips the last thing you see in the shot is a fading flare being
surrounded by sand that means that the hope from a few shots before is
seemingly lost altogether.
7.
In the
first moments of the scene they are farther from the sandstorm than at any
other point and this openness allows for lots of light and while the scene is
still dramatic it almost seems optimistic.
Implications: About observation 6
1.
Nux is looking to prove himself in the eyes of
his leaders and fellow war boys.
2.
Suicide is not frowned upon in this society it
is celebrated.
3.
The paint on nux’s mouth signifies he will die
4.
This scene points out the amount that the
society in mad max is immoral and twisted to believe their guzzoline religion
5.
The flare disappearing into the storm is suppose
to make the the audience fear that max died
6.
This scene emphasizes how activities like this are
a normal occurance
7.
Life has less value since everyone is already
dying
This film represents how a dystopia can be caused by an
environmental issue as well as a governmental issue and in this film it is
both.
