Summary: In the reaping scene from The Hunger Games, Primrose Everdeen is chosen as the female tribute from District 12. Her sister, Katniss Everdeen, volunteers to go in her place. Peeta Mellark is then chosen as the male tribute.

Observation 1: There were many close ups on Katniss, Prim, Peeta, and Effie. (shot)

Observation 2: Full shots and long shots occurred when viewing the stage and viewing the audience. (shot)

Observation 3: On stage, after she volunteers, Katniss looks down or off camera. (eyeline vector)

Observation 4: The objects, like the stage and other buildings, in District 12 are very dark, dull, and run-down. (color)

Observation 5: The colors of the clothing are white and gray, or very dull. (color/costume)

Observation 6: Effie’s clothing is really the only bright color in this scene. (color/costume)

Observation 7: The camera movements in this scene are very slow and only become jerky in the part where Katniss volunteers. (camera work)

Observation 8: The citizens of District 12 appear to be scared and tense throughout the scene. (character)

Observation 9: Katniss acts very brave in order to protect her sister. (character)

Observation 10: Effie acts very happy and excited about choosing tributes, rather than feeling sorry for them. (Character)

Implications of Observation 4: The objects, like the stage and other buildings, in District 12 are very dark, dull, and run-down.

Implication 1: This causes the environment to seem dirty. 

Implication 2: Unhappiness of citizens. 

Implication 3: Darkness shows despair. 

Implication 4: This could imply that there is poverty within district 12.

Implication 5: The run-down aspect implies that the district is not very well taken care of. 

Implication 6: The dullness implies that luxury is not known in District 12. 

Implication 7: Implies fear and hopelessness. 

Implication 8: This could also reflect the fact that this is the coal district.

This scene from The Hunger Games is representative of the issue of “safety versus danger” because it is clear that the citizens view the games as a dangerous event. Throughout this scene, Effie is very cheerful about choosing tributes which shows that because she has no chance of going into the games or having a family member go into the games, she does not feel like her life is in danger. The families of District 12 show fear and despair throughout this scene because they have a chance of being put in a dangerous situation.
