In the strand gap, broken, dimensions, segmented, Moylan uses the idea of a gap to illustrate the effects of a dystopia on the social classes of rich and poor.  He goes on to explain that the social violence among non-privileged people has been intensified. Moylan draws evidence from the 1980s specifically looking at the administrations of Reagan, Thatcher, and Kohl.  He looked at the economic, political, and cultural aspects of the time.  While William’s, on the other hand, uses words such as broken and segmented in order to explain the realism in art.  He explains that using these concepts in art illustrates that the art is a reduction of “reality”. Williams draws on evidence from a study from the New York Graphic Society and artists Rene Margritte and Michel Foucalt.  He draws from the New York Graphic society study that characterization of our art in the current century, while he uses the artists as example of the realist movement.
