The group has just been riding on the motorcycles and Max has hurried to catch up to stop Furiosa.

Observation 3: The lighting is brighter.
Observation 4: Various members of the group offer their opinion.
Observation 5: Camera looks head on at Furiosa and the group.
Observation 6: While looking at Max, the camera shows what is up ahead.
Observation 7: Furiosa is challenging Max.
Observation 8: Max has come to help.
Observation 9: Focuses on Nux when he speaks.
Observation 10: Camera looks up at Max as he speaks.

The camera shows Furiosa flanked by the rest of the group.
Implication 1: She is the leader.
Implication 1: Her leadership is being challenged as they are talking to her.
Implication 1: The camera wants us to see the empty landscape.
Implication 1: The group is united finally.
Implication 1: Furiosa is the main focus.
Implication 1: The group agrees with Max rather than Furiosa.
Implication 1: Furiosa gives in to the group.

This scene is vital to the plot and to thematic issues such as the idea of hope as Nux points out. Furiosa had pinned all of the "mission" on the hope that the Green Place was real because she knew it was. Furiosa pinned this hope of getting to there onto the wives and they of course believed in it. Now that they have passed it and there is nothing ahead but more wasteland hope seems lost. It is now that Max decides to finally change their course and presents his insane plan. This revives the hope in the group which may had been extinguished.
