1.       Scene: Immortant Joe Speech: Immortant Joe is giving a speech about rising from the ashes and then he pours water down to the people. They all try to catch water in their makeshift buckets and when Immortant Joe stops the water, they all start fighting each other for the water.

2.       Observations:

Observation 1: The camera angle is pointing up at Immortant Joe and down on the people.

Observation 2: When the people are waiting for the water, you see close ups of dirty, mistreated people.

Observation 3: When Immortant Joe is about to pour the water, they make the camera go over his shoulder.

Observation 4: When the old man looks through the binoculars and the camera shows what he sees, you see a far away and distorted view of Immortant Joe.

Observation 5: Then the camera angle goes to an extreme long shot allowing you to see how any people are under Immortant Joe’s control.

Observation 6: There’s a lot of screaming and cheering while people are listening to Immortant Joe’s speech.

Observation 7: There’s a close up of Immortant Joe which allows the audience to see how gross and scary he is.

Observation 8: There’s a loud sound of flies buzzing to show you how dirty and mistreated the people are.

Observation 9: When he drops the water down to the people below, intense music plays as the people run forward.

3.       Implications:

Observation 1:  The camera angle is pointing up at Immortant Joe and down on the people.

Implication 1: Immortant Joe literally and figuratively looks down on the people.

Implication 2: This shows his power over the people.

Implication 3: He doesn’t have respect for the people but he acts like he’s a good leader.

Implication 4: This creates the sense that he is almost a god to them.

Implication 5: Immortant Joe controls whether they get water or not, which is deciding whether they live or die.

Implication 6: They are dependent on Immortant Joe.

Implication 7: The downwards camera angle can show the peoples’ helplessness

Implication 8: Even though the people are dirty and mistreated, they look up to Immortant Joe.

4.       Analysis of the Issue:

This observation touches on the issue of dependence vs independence. The people are so dependent on Immortant Joe that they really can’t fight against him. They can’t rebel because without Immortant Joe, they’d probably die. In dystopias, the people are dependent on the government which keeps them from rebelling. Things might not be great and the leaders might be corrupt, but they still provide a little bit for the people. The people crowding around to get some water shows how desperate they are. They need water to survive, Immortant Joe provides them with water, so they need Immortant Joe for their survival. Even though he mistreats them and doesn’t care about them, they stand there and cheer him on. That’s the power that dependence has on people.
