Blog Post #6 Reilly Crabbs

1. In this scene Katniss is evaluated by the Capital in preparation of the games. Their lack of acknowledgement towards her and Katniss’s retaliation show the underlying effects that assert the Capital's dominance, but at the same time reinforce Katniss’s determination to not be the their pawn.

Detail 1: Katniss is rarely captured by an angle that shows her as an equal; this only happens for a split second when she shoots the arrow at the pig.

Detail 2: As the color black fills in a majority of the space, one can notice that the entire evaluation team is dressed in all black.  The blackness of their suits highlights the authority that the men hold over Katniss and other tributes. Also, the because the suits are homogenous in color, one can infer that these men all think alike.

2. “... androids possessing the full range of "human" emotions in a world of debased, robot-like human beings-spiritless, flattened and numbed by the crush and violence of the badly over freighted world they have been left behind to endure and police" (Williams 388).  The quotations around the word ‘human’ suggests that the concept of  human emotion has become foreign and inaccessible.

Detail: In this scene emotion has been stripped from actions. Yes, there are facial expressions involved but in general there seems to be a dull sense of emotion in both Katniss and the evaluation team. From this, one can infer that the men, in the homogeneous dress, all lack a sense of compassion that would normally accompany a human life.

3. ‘The Hunger Games’ seem to be about two teenagers fighting for their lives in a government sanctioned bloodbath, however, in light of Williams’s idea that human emotion has become so warped that there is no actual sense of real emotion, negative or positive, one can see that  the movie seems also to argue that   the underlying effects of missing emotions helps assert the Capital's dominance, but at the same time reinforce Katniss’s determination to not be the their pawn.
