Articles: Moylan’s “Preface” to Scraps of the Untainted Sky and Williams “Ideology as Dystopia: An Interpretation of Blade Runner.”

Part 1:

 Common Binaries, stands, or repetitions-

1)      Binaries: hero/villain, fear/power, and real/imaginary

2)      Common strand of disaster: Such as words like destruction, devastation, failure, and defeat

3)      Repetition: Machine

Part 2:

The repetition and or idea of the word “machine” is used in a completely different context in Moylan’s “Preface” than when used in William’s article. In Moylan’s “Preface”, the idea of a “machine” is what he describes a dystopia as. He claims that it is the “negative narrative machine” that has drawn from historical periods in the past and are what have shaped the ideas of dystopias since then. Yet, in contrast, Williams uses the word “machine” as a repetition to describe the characters within Blade Runner. In this particular dystopia, there is a difference between humans and “machine”, which are also known as “replicants”. Yet, the “machines” possess human qualities that were created not from the terrors of the 20^th century like Moylan claims, but were created due to the development of technology in both the current and future centuries to come.
