1. X: look at your original analysis in your SP3, along with our comments for revision. In two sentences, summarize the issue, and list two visual concrete details from the film scene that support your reading of this issue.
The last scene in "Mad Max: Fury Road" shows the feminism prevalent in this film as Furiosa is viewed as not only a hero, but as a female hero, which is rare in a world where gender equality is not yet given.
Detail 1: The camera shows Furiosa atop a semi as the crowd cheers for her. This angle shows Furiosa's battle wounds and pain along with the happiness and cheers from the crowd as she has brought them water and saved them from what could be death.
Detail 2: The camera pans from Furiosa to Max, as he disappears into the crowd and she watches. This shows the silver lining between the two, that evolved from what was, in the beginning, anything but respect between the two. Furiosa is shown above Max, further implying who the real hero of the story was.
2. Y: now look at the portable concepts in SP4. Pick one portable concept and in two sentences, describe how it extends your original reading in step 1. Relate this to a visual concrete detail.
In Jenny Wolmark's "Alternative Futures? Science Fiction and Feminism", Wolmark discusses the intersection of feminism and modern dystopian works. Mad Max: Fury Road is an example of what Wolmark describes the new "era" of SF, as the hero and main character in the story is Furiosa, a woman. This last scene, where everyone is greatful for Furiosa and her actions, futher shows that the new "era" of SF includes women heroes- despite how society may be treating women at the time that the film was made.
Detail: In this scene, it is clear that Furiosa has saved her people from death. Her sense of pride is shown as she stays silent and watches the events unfold before her. The people in this society do not make comments or suggestions about her being a woman, but focus rather on the fact that she chose to bring back the water to them.
3. Following the suggested thesis structure, write down your X/Y thesis.

While on the surface, Mad Max: Fury Road seems to be about a war between a world that is fallen with disease and thirst, Jenny Wolmark's idea that feminism is a part of the new "era" of science fiction is clear in this movie as it is rather an argument about how women can be the heroes of the story despite their current status in modern society.
