Hannah Rayner Blog Post 4

The wives have just gotten out of the war rig and have started to drink the water.  Max comes up and starts to fight with Furiosa.

Make 7-10 observations about the film scene, based in the visual analysis tools you’ve learned (camera angles, vectors, color, costuming, character, etc.). Label these observations accordingly.
Observation 1:  The wives are wearing all white and clean.
Observation 2: Max and Furiosa are dirty and wearing dark colors
Observation 3: Camera keeps switching quickly between Max’s face and Furiosa’s face
Observation 4: Fighting scenes are sped up
Observation 5: Max at end of fight scene shown above Furiosa
Observation 6: Wives clothes dirty after fight scene
Observation 7: Wives shown in one shot together, not at all separately
Observation 8: Camera keeps showing close up of guns
Observation 9: Everything in the scene is a dirty or dark color except for the wives’ outfits and the color of the war boy

Pick ONE observation from your list above and list 7-10 implications of this one detail. (For example, the color red in this scene implies blood and violence...) . This may be difficult to get 7-10, but try your best to come up with associations, even if they seem inconsequential.
Implication 1: The dark color on Furiosa’s face could represent her desire to conceal her femininity.
Implication 2: The dark colors in this scene of Max and Furosia helps to distinguish them from the wives and the colors showed that they have been tainted in some way.
Implication 3: The dark colors of Max’s clothing and dirty face represent Max’s internal turmoil.
Implication 4: Darkness around war boy’s eyes can represent the grim filled life he lives of only trying to please the leader.
Implication 5: Black band of fabric around Furiosa’s waist could be representing her fear of being exposed and her body being seen.
Implication 6: The fact that the wives clothes become dirty after the fight suggests that they have become tainted by the violence they have been exposed to.
Implication 7: The war rig is completely black to imply the impending doom and negative aspects of trying to escape their dystopian society.
Implication 8: The color that is dirty and dark represents the poor quality of life in the dystopian society.  The war boy and the wives are contrasting colors because they live a better life than Max and Furiosa who are of a different social class.

Based on your analysis, explain how this film scene is representative of an issue we’ve addressed in class.

This film scene is representative of fighting between social classes.  It appears that Max and Furiosa are from similar classes because they are wearing similar colors.  While it appears that, the wives and the war boy are of similar classes because they share similar colors.  It appears in this scene that within the social class to solve their problems they use violence, which is why the camera kept zooming in on the gun in the fight between Furiosa and Max.  It appears that the upper classes, however, so the war boy and the wives do not actually engage in the fighting between the lower class people.  The wives appear to try to help Furiosa, but they never actually fight Max.  Same with the war boy he helps Max, but he never actually fights Furiosa.  The point this scene is trying to make is that lower social classes appear to solve problems with violence.  While upper social classes appear to either help create the violence or stop the violence and fighting from occurring.
