1. One of the biggest issues in the Hunger Games is the oppression of the districts. The capitol oppresses them by seeing them as less important as the Capitol and forcing them to participate in the hunger games every year. This oppression is visualized in the Reaping scene by the camera angles.

Detail 1: Close-ups are focused on Effie to capture her every move and show details of her outfit. Her outfit is a symbol of her wealth and status.

Detail 2: When the camera is faced towards Effie, it's always angled upwards showing her superiority but whenever the camera is faced towards the crowd the camera is angled down on them.

2. In his “Preface” to Scraps of Untainted Sky, Thomas Moylan defines dystopia as being “largely the product of the terrors of the twentieth century” (xi). Moylan implies that our fears are brought on by events that have already happened. This suggests that the terrible things that make a dystopian novel a dystopia, already exist in the real world.

Detail: In this scene, the people are being controlled by an oppressive government, this could be a parallel to the oppressive governments that have existed in history.

3. While this movie seems to be about an oppressive government, Moylan's definition of a dystopia suggests that it's actually about our fear of being oppressed.
