Megan Lightcap - Blog Post 4

Summary: 

President Snow is talking to the game maker about why the games exist and how they need to give them just enough hope that they feel as though they have control, but not too much that they try and take more control. 

Observations:

1. There are many close ups on President Snow and the game maker.
2. The background of this scene is blurred.
3. The lighting of this scene is very bright and colorful.
4. There is lots of red and white in this scene, from the flowers to the shirts Snow and the game maker are wearing.
5. The camera angle tends to be over the shoulder of the opposite character.
6. There are happy sounding birds in background of the scene, however the viewer cannot see them, only hear them.
7. The cut of the game maker's beard looks almost like flames.

Implications: (for number 4)

1. The color white tends to represent purity, peace and innocence in western culture, which is very odd seeing how President Snow (the one wearing the white shirt) is the one who is encouraging this "war" between the different districts during the hunger games.
2. In eastern and middle eastern cultures, the color white tends to represent snow, cold and death, which are much better representations of President Snow and that he is encouraging these kids fighting to the death.
3. The color red tends to represent anger, danger, boldness, strength, determination, and power.
4. The red could also represent the blood of the tributes in the hunger games. The red roses could even more specifically represent those who have died in previous hunger games.
5. Red and white are the only two prevalent colors in the scene, showing the struggle between the game makers purity and innocence, since this is his first year as game maker, and the power and strength he is trying to embody to convince people he is capable of being the game maker.
6. At the end of the scene, Snow is cutting the leaves and stem off of a white rose, possibly signifying that the game maker has to leave his innocence behind while creating these hunger games.
7. The white roses could also represent hope. Since there are many white roses in the garden and few red roses, Snow could be suggesting that the people have too much hope right now, and the game maker has to change that. That would also explain why Snow is cutting the leaves and stem off of a white rose, to try and slow break down the people's hope.

Analysis:

This shows the idea of government control. The government is trying to control the people by limiting their hope and the ways in which the see the world. The government has gained so much control that they can brainwash their people to believe that what they are doing is necessary. Even though the government is able to control the lives of their citizens, Snow is still showing that they struggle with giving their people too much hope.
